This section will examine and summarise the key developemtns in the Travel and Tourism sector from the 1960's to present day.
Travel and Tourism Legislation
The Tourism Act 1969: This is the act of parliament to provide the management, development, marketing, and regulation of sustainable tourism and tourism-related activities and services and for connected purposes.
The Transport Acts 1980: The Transport act in 1980 licensed regulations affecting coach express routes and tours of over 30 miles. This lead to competition between National Bus and Private companies.
The Transport Act 1985: The Transport Act bought wholesale regulation and this meant that private companies could operate in any route.
The Package Travel Regulations: The main aim of this is to give people more protection and access to compensation when things go wrong with buying package holidays from tour operators. These regulations mean that tour operators can no longer claim that problems that happen withing a packaged holiday are outside their control.
Air Passenger Duty Act: A way of helping to reduce the growth of air travel and its environmental impacts, as well as generating extra tax revenue for the government.

The link below will take you to an article about APD (Air Passenger Duty) and it informs people that ABTA is to lead a summer campaign to make holidaymakers aware of rising air passenger duty charges. Currently APD costs from £10-£80 depending upon seat class and destination.
"But if we can highlight the issue to the public and encourage them to write to their MPs, that might be more successful. Most people are not really aware of the changes and how much they will have to pay." Andy Cooper (development director at ABTA).
I believe in the future this may lead to people not wanting to travel long haul flights or upper classes due to it being more expensive for the tourists, APD may effect people's choice on travelling abroad in the future because they may not want to pay.

Holiday Camps:
A holiday camp is a type of holiday accommodation that encourages holiday makers to stay within the site boundary and provides entertainment for them between meals.
The holiday makers can either choose full board, half board or self-catering:
Full Board: All meals would be included in the price.
Half Board: Only the main meal would be included.
Self-Catering: No meals provided.
From the end of the war , through the 1950's the holiday camp industry thrived. From the 1960's onward, many camps also added static caravan accommodation and today large numbers of static caravans are also termed holiday camps. By 1964, Warner had 14 camps across the country , Butlin opened his 10th camp in 1966, and Pontin had expanded into providing trips to Mediterranean locations in 1963.
Centre Parcs was founded in July 1987 and the first village in the UK that opened was at Sherwood Forest, with the place offering short break holidays on a year round basis. The Centre Parcs concept is to provide short breaks in the forest, bringing families together and back to nature with high quality accommodation, outstanding leisure facilities and over 200 activities.

According to a survey British holiday parks enjoyed a "purple patch", drawing a record of six million people last year. A report by the research group Mintel found that organisations such like Butlins, Pontins and Centre Parcs had a very busy year in 2013, the Daily telegraph states that more than a million people stayed at Butlins three camps last year.Chief executive at Center Parcs, Martin Dalby is quoted as saying that 90 percent of the companys bookings were "short breaks". I believe that now British holiday parks are now going to become more popular with tourists because families may find it more easier to travel within Britain with children than visiting other countries outside the UK. Package Holidays:
A package holiday consists of transport and accommodation advertised and sold together by a vendor known as a tour operator, also other services may be provided such like rental cars, activities or outings in the day. Package holidays are organised by tour operators and sold to a consumer by a travel agent.
An individual called Vladimir Raitz, the co-founder of the Horizon Holiday Group, pioneered the first mass package holidays abroad with charter flights between Gatwick Airport and Corsica in 1950, and organised the first package holiday to Palma in 1952, Lourdes in 1953 and the Costa Brava and Sardinia in 1954.
By the late 1950's and 1960's, these cheap package holidays- which combined flights, transfers and accommodation- provided the first chance for most people in the United Kingdom to have an affordable travel abroad.

Tourists are now turning their backs on traditional beach holidays provided by the leading tour operators, responsibletravel.com is launching a "Had Enough?" campaign that is demanding Thomas Cook, Thomson Holidays and MyTravel develop more responsible tourism practices. Cheif executive and co founder of Responsibletravel, Justin francis says the "big three" are already losing money because holiday makers are fed up. It states that package holidays are declining- it claims that 32% of people are taking independent holidays versus 30% on package holidays and 19& going on tailor-made or specialist holidays. I believe that package holidays are now becoming less popular with tourists because they are finding it easier to book their own flights and accommodation than booking a packaged holiday.
